Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders is planning to visit Baltimore tomorrow, in what looks like an explicit attempt to connect more closely with black voters.
Sanders plans to meet with black leaders at the Freddie Gray Empowerment Center, a youth center named after the man who died in police custody this spring. He will also tour Gray’s Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood. Sanders will be meeting with Reverend Jamal Bryant, the prominent Baltimore pastor who recently compared black leaders who met with Donald Trump to prostitutes.
Sanders’s visit coincides with the trial of William Porter, the first BPD officer to stand trial for charges relating to Gray’s death. It seems pretty clear that this is part of Sanders’s recent attempts to connect with black voters.
