Maryland is well represented on the cover of the new Sports Illustrated, as Bethesda’s Katie Ledecky and Baltimore’s Michael Phelps share space with gymnast Simone Biles.
All three cover athletes have made history at the Olympic games in Rio. Phelps added to his record medal count; Ledecky shattered the Olympic record in the 800-meter freestyle by nine seconds (and beat her own world record by two seconds); and Biles is the first woman in a generation to earn four gold medals in gymnastics events.
This isn’t the first photograph to feature both Ledecky and Phelps. In 2006, a nine-year-old Ledecky met Phelps at an autograph signing. The moment was captured in a snapshot. The two recreated the photo, with roles reversed, in Rio:
