Baltimore chef Sammy Davis Jr., a winner of the food competition show “Chopped,” is partnering with Miskiri Hospitality Group to open a brunch restaurant in South Baltimore.
Davis has teamed up with Miskiri Hospitality Group to take over the former Papi Cuisine space at 2 E. Wells St., where they plan to open a restaurant called Sunday Social in mid-July, Baltimore Business Journal reported.
Papi Cuisine closed in August and shifted operations to its sister concept, Proper Cuisine, in downtown Baltimore.
Sunday Social will bring Sunday brunch vibes round-the-clock to the South Baltimore space, with “mouthwatering dishes to delightful sips” for patrons to indulge in, according to a post on their Instagram account.
When Davis first appeared on the food competition show “Chopped,” he nearly tasted victory but was defeated in the dessert round.
He later returned to the show for an all-runners-up episode, in which he redeemed himself with sweetbread wonton-tacos; gochujang and root beer lamb stir-fry; and a basil and fruit salad with a creamsicle shot. Davis ultimately won the comeback episode – on his birthday, no less.
At the time of his “Chopped” episodes, Davis was the executive chef at CR Lounge, which has since closed.
Davis opened his first Milk and Honey restaurant in Atlanta before expanding the Southern Louisiana-inspired food business to the Maryland and D.C. area. He and co-owner Monique Rose sold that brand in 2020.
In 2024, Davis opened Yeiboh Kitchen in central Baltimore’s Old Goucher neighborhood, where the menu features “Asian/American dishes with a Southern influence,” according to the restaurant’s website. He sold his ownership interest and exited the business earlier this month.
“While this chapter is closing, the next one is just beginning,” Davis wrote in his June 5 Instagram post about his exit from Yeiboh Kitchen. “I’m excited to dedicate my energy to the projects and partnerships that will shape the future of my brand.”
If Davis’s previous success with brunch dining is any indicator, a sunny future is in store for Sunday Social. This year, Baltimore Magazine readers named Yeiboh Kitchen the “Best Brunch” spot in Baltimore, beating out fellow top favorites Miss Shirley’s Cafe and Cece’s Roland Park.
Miskiri Hospitality Group runs restaurants in Maryland, D.C., Virginia, and Ohio, specializing in Creole and Southern-inspired dishes.
