A youth basketball ref is set to be paid a settlement from the city after getting seriously hurt at a game. A coach and spectators were responsible for the injuries.
According to the city’s Board of Estimates, Richard Hitchens sustained injuries while refereeing a game at St. Frances Academy in March, 2015. During the game, a coach of one team and other spectators assaulted him. The Daily Record reports Hitchens sustained head injuries, and required surgery as well as further medical and dental care to correct.
The Board of Estimates on Wednesday approved a $30,000 settlement with Hitchens. Formally, the reason for the settlement is that the city and St. Frances Academy did not provide adequate security for the game.
