In a neighborhood filled with pubs inhabiting hundred-plus-year-old buildings, each with its own unique and storied history, yet another pub opening might not seem noteworthy. The Wren, however, opened in the space once occupied for four decades by Birds of a Feather at 1712 Aliceanna St. in Fells Point.

Furthermore, The Wren is owned by the pair who run the acclaimed bistro and wine bar Le Comptoir du Vin on Maryland Avenue, making their latest venture another feather in their cap. Rosemary Liss and Will Mester have big plans for the small space, and Mester spoke to Fishbowl about their new Fells Point spot.

Over the course of the building’s history, it has been a pub for bikers, lesbians, and whiskey lovers, but Mester simply hopes The Wren will be a place for everyone.

“The hope is to be a community space, meaning that the bar is a balanced and diverse representation of the neighborhood,” Mester told Fishbowl in an email. “The soft opening [on Thursday, Feb. 6] went very well. We had a great time.”

Mester said they are still working towards meeting their planned hours, which are Monday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

The Wren’s menu changes to some extent daily or weekly and drafts rotate as well. They have over 80 different scotches, and are equipped to make all classic cocktails. They also have non-alcoholic beer as well as soft drinks. A sample menu is available on their website.
