
For the second straight day, the number of coronavirus cases in Maryland rose by more than 700, state data show.
Maryland’s confirmed coronavirus cases rose by 756 since Tuesday, when officials reported an increase of 733. Today’s total represents the largest one-day increase since June 5, when there were 912 new cases.
But the increase comes as state health officials reported an additional 21,533 coronavirus test results on Wednesday, marking the largest number of results recorded in a single day.
Of the coronavirus tests completed over the last seven days, 4.26 percent came back positive.
There have been a total of 75,016 Marylanders who have tested positive for COVID-19, while 605,072 have tested negative as of Wednesday morning, according to the Maryland Department of Health’s COVID-19 Case Map Dashboard.
The state has completed a total of 855,941 coronavirus tests since the beginning of the pandemic.
Before Wednesday, the largest number of tests reported in a single day was 21,140 on July 11.
During the week of March 29, the first full week the state reported testing data available, Maryland conducted a total of 18,186 tests.
By the week of May 17, the first week of Maryland entering phase one of its recovery plan, that weekly total jumped to 51,498 tests.
In the week of June 7, the first week of phase two of the state’s recovery plan, the weekly testing total reached 65,045.
And last week, the state conducted 94,436 tests.
Maryland has hospitalized 11,625 people for COVID-19 since the pandemic began, including the 447 who are currently hospitalized. Of those patients, 318 are in acute care and 129 are in intensive care.
Maryland hospitalizations have increased for a second day, jumping by 32 patients on Wednesday. One day prior, the number of patients increased by 29.
The number of patients in acute care and intensive care grew by 21 and 11, respectively.
A total of 3,209 Marylanders have died from COVID-19, with seven additional deaths reported since Tuesday. There are also 132 deaths suspected to be related to coronavirus.
As of 10 a.m. Wednesday, there have been 20,099 confirmed cases in Prince George’s County; 15,986 in Montgomery County; 9,153 in Baltimore County; 8,835 in Baltimore City; 5,683 in Anne Arundel County; 2,922 in Howard County; 2,635 in Frederick County; 1,552 in Charles County; 1,325 in Harford County; 1,228 in Carroll County; 1,160 in Wicomico County; 739 in Washington County; 730 in St. Mary’s County; 536 in Cecil County; 459 in Calvert County; 347 in Caroline County; 339 in Worcester County; 299 in Queen Anne’s County; 222 Allegany County; 219 in Dorchester County; 208 in Kent County; 207 in Talbot County; 105 in Somerset County; and 28 in Garrett County, according to the dashboard.
Of Maryland’s confirmed cases, 2,355 have been people age 9 or younger; 4,146 have been people ages 10-19; 11,783 have been people ages 20-29; 14,028 have been people ages 30-39; 13,067 have been people ages 40-49; 11,571 have been people ages 50-59; 8,200 have been people ages 60-69; 5,156 have been people ages 70-79; and 4,710 have been people age 80 or older.
Maryland has identified 39,080 of the confirmed COVID-19 patients as female and 35,936 as male.
Of the Marylanders who have tested positive for COVID-19, 21,784 have been Black, 19,822 have been Hispanic, 15,394 have been white, 1,458 have been Asian, 3,583 have been another race, and data is not available for the remaining 12,975.
Nationwide, there have been at least 3,432,307 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States, including at least 136,463 deaths and 1,049,098 recoveries. More than 41.7 million people in the U.S. have been tested for COVID-19 as of 10 a.m. Wednesday, according to a real-time dashboard created by Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering.
