In a changing world, everyone designs. Each individual person and each collective subject – from enterprises to institutions, from communities to cities and regions – must define and enhance a life project. In this framework, Ezio Manzini’s new book distinguishes between “diffuse design” (performed by everybody) and “expert design” (performed by those who have been trained as designers) and maps what the latter can do to trigger and support meaningful social changes.

For more than two decades, Ezio Manzini has worked in the field of design for sustainability. Most recently, his interests have focused on social innovation, a major driver of sustainable social change. He is the founder of DESIS, an international network of schools of design specifically active in the field of design for social innovation and sustainability.

Presently, Ezio is Chair Professor of Design for Social Innovation at the University of the Arts London (UK), Honorary Professor at the Politecnico di Milano (Italy), and Guest Professor at Tongji University – Shanghai and Jiangnan University – Wuxi (China).

His most recent book, “Design, When Everybody Designs: An Introduction to Design for Social Innovation,” (MIT Press, 2015), presents a comprehensive picture of design for social innovation, the most dynamic field of action for both expert and non-expert designers in the coming decades.

Following the lecture, copies of “Design, When Everybody Designs” will be available for sale (at a discounted rate) and for signing by the author.

Hosted by the MICA Center for Social Design in collaboration with MICA Graphic Design MFA Program.

Supporting Partners: AIGA Baltimore, AIGA Washington, DC, Neighborhood Design Center, Baltimore Design School, and AIA Baltimore | BAF.
