Fell’s Point Main Street is offering a new self-guided walking tour through its historic and vibrant neighborhood. The walking tour highlights the area’s rich history via transporting vignettes and stories spanning from 1850 to 1950.

Walkers move at their own pace, exploring and unlocking narratives at a series of strategically placed stops throughout the neighborhood.

The tour is free and designed for history buffs, locals, and tourists alike. It’s easily accessible through QR codes available at various stops around the community. Those on the tour can hear vignettes that bring the past alive and reveal the hidden gems and landmark stories of Fell’s Point.

“The first iteration of the tour will include 46 points of interest over 42 snapshot stories or vignettes,” said Ginny Lawhorn, creator of the walking tour and Fell’s Point stakeholder. Several stories take place over more than one location, Lawhorn explained.

One story took place in 1913 at 1634 Aliceanna Street, where a hot controversy took place regarding a hotel owner who served beer on Sundays with a sandwich, flouting the liquor laws of the time. Allegedly because a sandwich is not a “meal,” the prosecutor argued Oscar Moritz, the hotel owner, should have his liquor license stripped from him. The liquor board decided he could keep his license under certain restrictions, but declined to decide the matter of whether or not a sandwich constituted a “meal.”

Fell’s Point Main Street is an official partner to Maryland Fleet Week and Flyover Baltimore, and is an extension site to the Maryland Fleet Week site. During Fleet Week, June 12 through June 18, the self-guided walking tour will add stops to the tour that include maritime stories. As time goes on, more iterations of the walking tour will evolve and follow.

The tour begins at Broadway Square in Fell’s Point, Baltimore, MD, and is available beginning Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at 11 a.m.
