Frederick County Executive Jessica Fitzwater announced two executive orders to freeze data center development and foster transparency.

The Thursday announcement comes a day after the Maryland Supreme Court shut down a voter-led referendum on data centers. More than 21,000 Frederick residents signed a petition against a 2,600 acre critical digital infrastructure overlay zone the county council created in December.

Also known as the CDI-OZ, or overlay zone, it was designed to limit the industry to a single location north of Adamstown and prevent urban sprawl. The zone is located on top of the former East Alcoa Aluminum Smelting Plant due to the land having much of the needed infrastructure.
