Friends School of Baltimore has named Kara Carlin as its Athletic Director, effective July 1. She joins the school from St. Timothy’s School, in Stevenson, Md., where since 2006 she served as A.D. and coached field hockey, lacrosse, and squash. Prior to that she served as head women’s lacrosse coach at Goucher College, and was an assistant lacrosse and field hockey coach at Bowdoin College.
“Kara brings exceptional leadership and energy to Friends School’s athletic program,” said its Head, Matt Micciche. “Her connections within the athletic community, at the local, regional, and national level, and her grounding in the School’s philosophy made her the ideal candidate.” (Ms. Carlin and her husband, Josh Carlin, a longtime teacher in the Upper School, have been Friends School parents since 2007.)
Ms. Carlin is the incoming president of the I.A.A.M. (Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland), having served as its vice-president from 2015 to 2017. During that time she implemented such programs as the annual Leadership Symposium for student-athletes and coaches and, new this year, the “Character Coin,” to recognize varsity players who exhibit the highest ideals of fair play, integrity and respect on the field.
With less than two weeks until the start of the fall pre-season, Ms. Carlin is excited to begin working directly with Friends’ coaches and students. “Together with the School’s exceptional coaching staff and supportive administration, I am confident we can build on the strong athletics foundation already in place and take the program to new heights,” she stated.
