A 1,000 pound heart-shaped mosaic sculpture will be unveiled at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) tomorrow.

The “Heart of Baltimore,” constructed of mirror, glass, and ceramic hearts, has been permanently placed at the corner of S. Greene and W. Lombard streets.

The structure is meant to symbolize the love, unity, and hope that Baltimoreans have shown throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

It also pays tribute to the strength and resiliency of the city’s frontline workers.

The artwork is a $130,000 gift from local nonprofit Art with a Heart, an organization that seeks to provide equitable access to visual art experiences.

In the past year alone, the nonprofit has installed 39 public art pieces, provided over 14,000 visual art classes, and engaged over 3,700 volunteers.

The Heart of Baltimore was constructed by nearly 1,000 volunteers across the city over the course of nine months.

The Heart of Baltimore was installed at UMMC on Nov. 1. Photo by Art with a Heart.

The heart is adorned with nearly 2,500 ceramic hearts with messages of love, hope, and encouragement.

A ceremony will take place tomorrow, Nov. 4, to unveil and celebrate the artwork.

Speakers will include Mayor Brandon Scott, Bert W. O’Malley, UMMC president and CEO, Randi Alper Pupkin, founder of Art with a Heart, and Joanne Brook, chairperson of Harbor City Links.

The ceremony will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the University of Maryland South Entrance, located at 22 S. Greene St.
