What: When I lived in the UK, I used to spend weekends with my cousins at their converted stables in the heart of the Cotswolds. On weekends, we’d drive around visiting many of the charming villages in the area, filled with houses made from the local stone. It is an architectural style which I adore, as evidenced by my love of Palmer & Lamdin, whose houses reflect the Cotswolds look and style.
This house, located on Saddlebrook Lane, in a private gated community in Stevenson, is an updated version of many of these stone Cotswold houses. It’s meant to echo the houses there which were expanded over the decades or even centuries with meandering roof-lines and differing architecture.
Built in 2006, the owner worked with a team including the architect, builder, interior designer and landscape designer to achieve his vision of a traditional Cotswold house but with all modern conveniences and amenities. The exterior of the house is faced with ashlar rough-tooled masonry with contrasting lintels, similar to houses in England. When you enter the home, you will find traditional details, including hand-waxed hickory floors, cedar beams and copious millwork throughout.
As expected, the ground floor features expansive living and dining rooms with French doors opening to the outdoors, a wood-paneled study, and family room. A large, double-height kitchen with Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, a large island, ample storage and counter space has plenty of room for family and friends to gather in front of the large stone fireplace.
The primary suite features a large luxurious bath with underfloor heating, an onyx-topped double vanity, a free-standing bathtub and a steam shower. While the majority of the house is above ground, 20% of it is below grade, and houses an exercise room, additional bedrooms, a media room, and a sauna.
The 1.5 acre property has a heated pool, a pool house, extensive patios, outdoor barbeque set-up, a hot tub, a three car garage, ample parking, and carefully considered landscaping that belies the age of this house.
Where: Saddlebrook Lane is located off of Greenspring Avenue, between Hillside Road and Greenspring Valley Road, in a private gated community just “behind” St. Timothy’s School. It’s convenient to the JFX and the Beltway, and to the stores, restaurants, and services at Quarry Lake.
Final Appraisal: If you’re longing for a house in the Cotswolds, but it’s not really
convenient to commute back and forth across “the pond” then this house might be exactly what you want. There is plenty of room for family and friends, for working from home and living the lush life. The listing for the house is here.
