Howard County Executive Calvin Ball is seeking residents interested in serving on the Animal Matters Hearing Board, including a licensed veterinarian living in Howard County. The application deadline is Friday, April 4, 2025.

Seven voting members serve on the board, one of whom is a licensed veterinarian practicing in Howard County. Three members have animal matters experience, and three members represent the public. No more than two members on the board come from the same County Council district.

Board members serve three-year terms. They rule on appeals for animal control law violations and issue orders and declarations regarding enforcement of animal control laws. Members make recommendations to Howard Countyโ€™s animal control facility and review the facilityโ€™s proposed budget.

Eligibility requirements include living in Howard County, being 18 years of age or older, having an interest in animal matters, and ability to attend board meetings. Meetings are held as needed on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the George Howard Building, located at 3430 Court House Drive in Ellicott City.

The county executive will review eligible applicants, and forward appointments to the Howard County Council for confirmation.

Howard County Animal Control and Adoption Center is part of Howard County Police Department. It investigates animal cruelty cases, rescues endangered animals, accepts unwanted pets from Howard County residents, runs a pet adoption program, offers humane education programs, and operates the Howard Countyโ€™s animal shelter.
