Did you know you could make money hunting for wild American ginseng in Maryland? Apparently, a pound of ginseng root could fetch somewhere around $1,000! This is my dream job. You’re self-employed; you get to hunt (you even get a hunting license!), but you don’t have to shoot an animal; and it only lasts a small fraction of a year.
Well, looks like it will stay a dream, as the Maryland Department of Natural Resources has banned harvesting the plant on public land for the 2013 season, which began Sunday. The prohibition is a response to a study conducted last year that found that the plant had “nearly disappeared” from the state, except for the Western mountains.
Well, I’ll get back into it once we rebuild the population I guess.
