Pi Day celebrates the mathematical number π, or pi, which can be used to calculate the circumference of a circle. And what better way to spend the holiday than with a delicious circular dessert like pie?
Grocery delivery service Instacart revealed the most popular pie flavor in each state based on sales data from February 2021 to January 2022. The company calculated which flavor had the highest share over the national average.
So what flavor takes the cake – err, pie – for Maryland?
Instacart found that apple pie was the favorite flavor in Maryland, as well as in Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Nebraska.
Apple pie was also the most popular flavor nationally, with that flavor accounting for more than 27% of pie sales through Instacart.
But cherry pie was the favorite flavor among the most states – 11 to be exact: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Pumpkin pie also garnered strong support as the popular flavor in nine states. It was followed by pecan pie with five states, tying with apple pie.
The full list of favorite pie flavors included: apple, banana cream, blueberry, Boston cream, cherry, chocolate, key lime, lemon meringue, marionberry, peach, pecan, pumpkin, and sweet potato.
Instacart reported that customers purchased more than 3.6 million pies through their delivery service last year.
