The Johns Hopkins University is planning to construct a new residence hall and dining facility on its Homewood campus to replace Alumni Memorial Residence I, which dates from 1923, and the Hopkins Cafe.
Hopkins representatives shared preliminary plans for the project this week and will present them to Baltimoreโs Urban Design and Architecture Advisory Panel at a future meeting. VMDO Architects of Washington, D. C., and Charlotteville, Va., is the architect. A rendering shows four-story brick-clad structures compatible with other Georgian-style architecture on Hopkinsโ core campus.
The project is one of three major campus life projects that the university is undertaking along North Charles Street, on the east side of the universityโs Freshman Quad and around the open lawn called The Beach. The others are a $250 million Student Center thatโs scheduled to open later this year and renovation of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library.
According to The Hub, Hopkinsโ news site, demolition of the 1923 student housing is expected to begin in the summer of 2026, and the replacement project is targeted for completion by the end of 2028. Other residence halls will be available to house students while the new housing is constructed, The Hub said.
