Johns Hopkins University’s Homewood Early Learning Center has a new home.
The childcare facility relocated this fall from 200 Wyman Park Drive to a newly-constructed, two-story building at 115 W. University Parkway.
Opening the new building enabled the Homewood Early Learning Center to expand enrollment from 92 children to 162, to meet current childcare demands and allow for future growth.
Moving it to University Parkway also frees up land on Wyman Park Drive for construction of a two-building home for Hopkins’ Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI) Institute.
Construction has begun on the site of the first DSAI building, south of Wyman Park Drive and east of Remington Avenue. The former Homewood Early Learning Center property will be the site of the second DSAI building. Hopkins is aiming to complete the project in 2029.
The Homewood Early Learning Center opened in 2015 and serves children aged 10 weeks through preschool. It’s open to everyone, with priority admission available to Johns Hopkins affiliates.
In addition to indoor spaces for “play-based and interactive learning,” the new facility has an outdoor play area overlooking Stony Run Creek Park. It also has administrative offices, work areas and conference spaces for the staff, and dedicated drop-off and parking areas for families.
The building was designed by Page of Washington, D. C. In its new location, the Homewood Early Learning Center continues its long-standing partnership with Downtown Baltimore Childcare (DBCC), a non-profit that manages the facility. Other DBCC locations are the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Early Learning Center at Henderson-Hopkins in Eager Park and on the campus of the University of Maryland Baltimore.
Enrollment is ongoing, and the center maintains a waiting list. More information is available at www.homewoodelc.org.
