Hot House: 2522 Stone Mill Road, Pikesville, MD. 21208
Low, contemporary style house in stone and cedar in the gated community of Rockland. Four bedrooms, three and a half baths, 3,601 sq. ft.. Lot size .15 acre, backs to woods. Exposed beam ceilings, skylights, walnut floors, stone fireplaces, finished basement, two car garage, back deck. 24 hour security, pool, tennis courts, clubhouse: $899,000
What: You’ve made your fortune, the kids are grown. Time for easy living. As gated communities go, Rockland ain’t too shabby. Originally part of the old Johnson estate, the Rockland community was built in 1979 by developer Marty Azola (the Rockland Grist Mill, Devon Hill, the rehabbed Towson Jail and many Baltimore landmarks). Rockland was the last word in stylish Baltimore living when it was built. It has held up nicely, and still wows, with million dollar homes set back in the trees, and smaller homes, like this one, closer to the road. All beautifully maintained, with lots of amenities– a large outdoor swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts, a clubhouse with guest suites, lawn care and snow removal. There are no McMansions here, the aesthetic is tasteful and tree lined.
No. 2522 is among the smaller properties, and it’s listed as a townhome. While it does share a wall with its neighbor, it looks and feels like a free standing house. Recently taken down to the rafters, everything is new and of a high standard. Open floor plan, soaring ceilings with heavy beams and an original stone fireplace (actually two, there’s another downstairs) with a raised hearth. Entrance foyer flows into large living room, around to a granite-countered gourmet kitchen, a master bedroom suite with marble bath, and ends back at the front of the house with a nice office and another bedroom. Stairs lead up to a large loft-like guest suite. Downstairs a large, carpeted family room and fourth bedroom. Heat, central air and all systems are new.
Where: Driving north from the city on Falls Road, take a left onto Old Court Road and an immediate right onto Stone Mill Road. Go through security, then drive straight back to the end. Rockland is conveniently situated, with easy access to both 83 and 695. You are minutes from downtown, Ruxton, and points north like Green Spring Station. Your locals will be Tark’s and the Valley Inn. The homes are nicely sited on lots of varying sizes and although they are all of a piece, it does not feel like a development.
Why: The house makes the most of the woods behind, with big windows all along the back side.
Why Not: Air conditioning unit blocks view from the family room window.
Would Suit: Semi-retirees, with one foot in Baltimore and one on the road.
NB: Although the neighborhood is private and peaceful, noise from 83 is omnipresent.
Hot House is sponsored by Towson-based American Land Title Corporation, commercial and residential settlement agents.
