State Del. Dan Morhaim has represented his district in Northwest Baltimore County for more than 20 years now, and has been known in recent years for helping the state craft the legal framework for its medical marijuana program.

But today, his colleagues from the Maryland State Legislature will convene in Annapolis to discuss his controversial role with one of the companies awarded a license by the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission. The Washington Post reported in July that Morhaim was listed as the clinical director for Doctor’s Orders, LLC, on the company’s application for a license. The following month, the company was picked for two highly sought-after licenses to both grow and dispense marijuana in Maryland.

The commission awarded only 30 business licenses in total. Tensions are high on that subject, with companies are suing the state after they were skipped and legislators calling for a re-draw for all licensees picks due to an alleged lack of diversity among company owners.

The ethics panel, officially known as the Joint Committee on Legislative Ethics, has not launched a formal inquiry into Morhaim’s ties to the slowly budding industry here in the state. However, its members will consider today whether to expand their investigation of him to see if he skirted disclosure rules or used his position as a delegate for financial gain, the Sun reports.

Morhaim, who is also a practicing physician, has affirmed his involvement in the company, but said in a statement that he “followed disclosure rules in this case as I always have,” per FOX45.

If the panel decides to clear his involvement in the company, Del. Morhaim can proceed as planned with his business. Still, Doctor’s Orders and any of the other firms picked for licenses may not be making any money off of their product anytime soon.
