The Maryland Board of Public Works (BPW) approved a new statewide voting system contract on Wednesday after the same proposal was removed from the board’s agenda three weeks ago amid transparency concerns.
The $109 million contract with vendor Election Systems and Software (ES&S) launches Maryland’s transition to new ballot marking devices, scanners and tabulators – all of which will be in place for the 2028 election.
That equipment and software has been federally certified to what’s known as Voluntary Voting System Guidelines (VVSG) 1.0 standards, which were set by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) in 2005.
