Mayor Brandon Scott names Calvin Young III to be his Chief of Staff

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott has named Calvin A. Young III to be his new Chief of Staff, effective April 9.

Young has served as a Senior Advisor to the mayor since September 2024 and served as his re-election campaign treasurer from 2023 to 2024. He will replace Marvin James, who is stepping down.

“To continue building on the historic progress we’ve made so far, we’re building the most hardworking and dedicated team this City has ever seen. And there is no one I trust more to lead that team than Calvin,” Scott said in a statement. “I’ve known Calvin since our days running high school track and field against each other. His intelligence has taken him everywhere — from the engineering bench to the corporate boardroom, from Harvard to the White House. But above all else, Calvin has always been a proud son of Baltimore. He will lead this office and this City with excellence, talent, and grit.”

With this administrative team, what is possible for Baltimore is endless.” 

Raised by a single mother in northeast Baltimore, Young is a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, New York University and Harvard Business School. He has worked at Camden Partners and Harbor Bankshares Corporation, and he is the co-founder of Green Street Impact Partners, a private equity firm that provides growth capital to companies in the education sector. His 15 years of experience in investing and operations management has led to more than $100 million in capital investments. 

Young currently serves on the board of Green Street Academy, a public charter school in Baltimore, the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company and Live Baltimore, and he chairs the board of East Baltimore Development Inc. He also serves on the Business Advisory Committee for the Comptroller of Maryland, and he co-chaired the Greater Baltimore Committee’s 10 Year Regional Strategy Steering Committee.

Young began his career as an engineer in aircraft health management at Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation in Stratford, Connecticut, where he supported management and testing of the integrated vehicle health monitoring units on Blackhawk helicopters and as an operations manager at Raytheon Technologies. He served five years on the national executive board of the National Society of Black Engineers, an engineering education and professional organization, and was its board chair from 2012 to 2013.

I’ve seen firsthand how he brings people together, leads with clarity, and stays rooted in service.”
