One of the nicest things about shopping locally owned businesses is getting to know the staff – people who are also neighbors and even friends and who typically have a deep passion for the products they’re selling.

At The Little Shoebox in Ruxton, owner Emilie Blaze works with a fun group of ladies. They range from college students to shoe industry veterans – and are united by a fierce love for the shoes and other accessories that surround them in the shop.

We talked with three of the team to find out their gift-giving strategies and favorite items in the shop right now.

Cary has worked at The Little Shoebox for three and a half years – and she loves it. “It’s a blast!” she says.

What gifts will you buy from the shop this season?

Gifts I love for this season are the gorgeous rabbit fur infinity scarves, so soft and elegant.

We also have some wonderful handmade jewelry by local artist Sally Moore and we carry my favorite fragrances, Antonia’s Flowers and Floret out of Osterville, Massachusetts which cannot be found at another retailer in the Baltimore area. Very special, light fragrances.

Which shoes are your favorite?

My FAVORITE shoe line is Loeffler Randall. This is a new line for us, and her/their designs are modern, fresh and are made of rich leathers and suedes. Gorgeous shoes and handbags. The adorable resort shipment just arrived and I can NOT WAIT for her Spring 2016 styles!

Jody Kesner

Jody head shotJody has worked at The Little Shoebox for a year and a half, but she started her shoe selling career 38 years ago and worked at the now defunct Joanna Gray for thirty years. “I have quite a passion for shoes!” she says.

What gifts will you be buying from the shop this season?

I just purchased a beautiful ring from the store that I will be giving as a gift – if I don’t decide to keep it for myself!

Which shoes are your favorite?

I can’t pick one! The Loeffler Randall multi-tasseled slide are my favorite shoe for cruise.

And I love the Lucchese cowboy boots with fringe.

But the cutest thing in the whole store is the baby Jack Rogers sandals!

If a man comes in looking for a gift for his wife, girlfriend or mom, what do you recommend?

I would suggest a pair of boots or a scarf or a piece of jewelry such as a beautiful pearl lariat.

What’s the best thing about working for The Little Shoebox?

The best thing about working at the store is seeing my former customers that I had such a bond with. And working in a store that has such beautiful shoes and accessories! And a great group of women to work with helps also!

Amanda Kavanaugh

Amanda - The Little ShoeboxAmanda is a busy sophomore at Stevenson University and New Jersey native. She has been working at The Little Shoebox since the end of September.

What gifts will you be buying from the shop this season?

There are SO many gifts I want to buy. Already I have bought the Posh Quilted Rain Boots for my mother for Christmas. Our Adult Coloring books are something I might grab, and probably one of the candles we sell. There is just so much it’s hard to choose!

Which shoes are your favorite?

It’s so hard to choose one shoe, but the Elaine Turner Claire Bootie is my absolute favorite.

If a man comes in looking for a gift for his wife, girlfriend or mom, what do you recommend?

We do a really handy (and smart) thing where women can come in and try shoes on, then make a “Wishlist” and when their husbands come in shopping for them we know exactly what shoe and what size.

But if the woman has not done that I would lead the men toward out accessories. It’s so hard to chose a shoe when it has not been tried on because each designer and style is different. We have a TON of jewelry and hand bags, and hats scarves, gloves. It would be almost impossible to not find a great gift.

What’s the best thing about working for The Little Shoebox?

Something is always going on. Almost every Friday, UPS drops off boxes of new inventory. It’s fun to keep up with the latest trends – and help women find amazing shoes!
