While Baltimore has plenty of great spots popping up to grab artisinally-made drinks with high-end ingredients, it’s the neighborhood watering holes that really bring out the adjectives in the national media. On Thursday, Esquire jumped into the fray by ranking one of the city’s finest dives among the best in the country.
Drinks Correspondent David Wondrich says Mount Royal Tavern is among the 18 best bars in America. It may go down as an odd choice after an intro offering praise for the cocktail spots that have multiplied on the wings of the mixology movement. But then again, it does have classical art on the ceiling.
In fact, Wondrich is particularly fond of the replica Michelangelo. The ideal drink, he says, is “Natty Boh, a shot of Pikesville and religious thoughts.” He doesn’t even mention the cuss bucket.
Overall, it’s good to see some recognition for a Baltimore institution. Best of all, nothing is likely to change there as a result of this nationwide press. So we’ll gladly raise a glass to Mt. Royal Tavern for earning recognition for being unapologetically yourself.
