Plenty of bright students grace the doors of Baltimore high schools every single day, but only a small fraction earns the esteemed title of National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist.
In fact, the distinction is bestowed on less than one percent of all U.S. high school seniors, or about 16,000 students. Students with the highest scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) become semifinalists. This honor allows them to join the pool of applicants vying for 8,000 National Merit Scholarships, valued at approximately $35 million. Each year, about 90 percent of semifinalists go on to become finalists, according to the Merit Scholarship Program.
Hereโs the list of 2013-2014 National Merit Semifinalists from Baltimore area independent and public schools. Congratulations, seniors. Good luck on the final leg of the competition!
