The Regional Manufacturing Institute of Maryland (RMI) has selected Notre Dame Preparatory School among its 2018 Champions of Manufacturing in the Emerging Leaders category. Notre Dame Prep was the only school, let alone the only girls school and only Catholic school, recognized by the RMI.
RMI’s Emerging Leaders category recognizes individuals or organizations who have made a dynamic impact on the future direction of the manufacturing industry. NDP received school-wide recognition (both for the Middle Level and Upper Level STEAM programs) for emerging leadership in the manufacturing area.
Specifically, NDP’s Middle Level project Carbon Footprint Fast was recognized for its excellence and leadership in this category. The Carbon Footprint Fast was held in NDP’s 180-student middle school during Lent 2018 and included activities such as reducing use of plastic utensils and increasing use of reusable containers. During the 40 days, it was estimated that reusable containers replaced 5,952 water bottles and 143.4 kilowatts of electricity were saved.
The Upper Level was recognized for its STEAM certification program in which students may purse Engineering and Manufacturing as one of four tracks. For example, Introduction to Engineering students design and manufacture scale models of tiny houses using the school’s laser cutter and CNC router. Design/Build Engineering students use 3D printers to design and manufacture a full-scale mechanism that assists communities faced with disabilities. Co-curricular programs such as the ACE Mentor Program and VEX Robotics enrich students’ STEAM experience, and the WIN (“Women In…”) Program placed interns with one of NDP’s many partner organizations, such as Whiting-Turner and NASA.
“This recognition is a tremendous accomplishment for NDP and serves as an external validation of NDP’s excellence and leadership in STEAM in the Maryland region,” said Sister Patricia McCarron, SSND, Ph.D., Headmistress. “Students today, especially girls, are greatly interested in STEAM fields, and NDP’s STEAM program cultivates students’ creativity, problem-solving, and entrepreneurial skills from our earliest grades through high school graduation and college preparation.”
NDP was recognized at the RMI gala in November.
The 2018 Champions of Maryland Manufacturing were nominated by people from across the state. Champions come from every county and Baltimore City. NDP was one of 280 nominations.
