Rising Women at NDP

NDP’s entrepreneurs-in-training at Stanley Black & Decker

At Notre Dame Prep (NDP), the mission of “educating girls to transform the world” is lived every day, in and out of the classroom.  What better way to accomplish this than to send students out into the business world, giving them the opportunity to both work with and learn from women executives.  This was part of the inspiration behind NDP’s most recent on-campus club, Rising Women.  Co-sponsored by Junior Achievement, Rising Women partners NDP students with female mentors from Stanley Black and Decker.  With a Shark Tank-like format, the 17-week program challenges a selective group of high schoolers to develop, pitch and produce a product to a group of businesswomen mentors.

The expectations are high and JA Rising Women underlines the importance of commitment.  In its literature, it claims, “The program is great experience, but relies on the effort of the students involved to make it successful.”

Meet Joanne Jones, Notre Dame Prep’s Incoming Executive Director of Academics

Joanne Jone - NDP

Founded in 1873, Notre Dame Preparatory School (NDP) boasts a lengthy and impressive reputation throughout the independent school community in Baltimore. Its one-to-nine student to faculty ratio, 100 percent acceptance rate to four-year colleges, and more than $22 million in academic scholarships awarded to this year’s graduating seniors speak to just some of its marks of excellence. Joanne Jones, NDP’s new incoming executive director of academics, plans to build on the school’s positive trajectory. Read our interview with her here:

You are approaching some big life changes over the next few months: moving from the Midwest to the East Coast and transitioning from a co-ed, preschool through grade eight school to an all-girls’ middle- and high school. How does that feel?

Transitioning to NDP as the Executive Director of Academics feels like coming home. In December of 2018, I engaged in a national search for a top leadership position in Catholic education. Much of my search focused on the East Coast. My son and daughter-in-law live in Manhattan, and I have extended family scattered throughout the East Coast. When I arrived at NDP for my two-day visit, I had the opportunity to meet with faculty, staff, students, alumnae and Sister Patricia. I left knowing that I would welcome the opportunity to lead and collaborate at NDP. I was blessed to have several excellent opportunities, none as compelling as NDP.

Notre Dame Prep Seniors Reflect on Four Memorable Years

Notre Dame Prep Seniors 2019
NDP Senior Ashley Nwafor

It’s a late spring afternoon at Notre Dame Preparatory School (NDP) in Towson, and there’s a palpable buzz in the air. And no wonder. The school’s seniors are winding down the final days of their high school career. They’re fretting about AP exams, putting final touches on end-of-the-year projects, getting excited about the upcoming prom and, of course, graduation. Then they’ll be on to the next phase of their academic lives.

But first, a few graduating seniors—Ashley Nwafor, Olivia Meyers, and Suzie Albornoz—take the time to reflect on their four years of high school at NDP. At once reflective and giddy with memories, they discuss how their high school experience has shaped them into the young women they are today, and the multiple ways it’s prepared them for what lies ahead.

Notre Dame Prep Wins Two Regional Awards for Workplace Quality and Service

Notre Dame Preparatory School (NDP) recently received two regional awards recognizing the school’s quality work environment and service mission:

  • For the eighth consecutive year—and each year since the program’s inception—NDP was named among The Baltimore Sun’s Top Workplaces. In particular, the school received special recognition in the area of “meaningfulness,” which is the second time in the last four years that NDP was celebrated for this quality. NDP placed 4th among 25 mid-size employers.
  • NDP’s Camp Umoja, a summer camp for Baltimore City youth, was honored at the 44th Annual Mayor’s Business Recognition Awards. This award is given annually to those organizations which have demonstrated significant leadership and service for a better Baltimore and have committed resources to improving the quality of life in Baltimore City. Since its founding in 1985, approximately 3,300 campers and 1,650 volunteer counselors have been involved in Camp Umoja.

For NDP Seniors, a Strong School Community Helps Prepare Them for the Future

“I don’t have senioritis,” says Marla Varnado. Varnado, an outgoing girl in her final year at Notre Dame Preparatory School, is senior class treasurer and a member of the basketball team; she also juggles commitments to various service and a rigorous academic schedule. And she loves every minute of it.

Homeless Jesus Replica Will Be Displayed in City and County Before Final Installation

“Do you know there’s a homeless person sleeping in the church?”

That’s just one of the comments made lately by people who visit the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary near downtown Baltimore.
