Here are some brunch options for New Year’s Day. For the most part, these are places that are either doing something a little special for New Year’s Day or don’t typically serve breakfast or brunch on Friday.
If you anticipate not feeling like going out at all on Friday, here’s an idea. Give a call to chef Sarah Acconcia, now of Wild Thyme Event Studio, and she’ll come to your place to whip up a New Year’s Day brunch or dinner. Acconcia said she still has some availability, but you better call soon. Acconcia cooks only custom menus, with no preset packages, so she will need time to gather up your heart’s desire. Private dining is limited to 50 people. 443-519-2209.
For the past four years or so, I’ve gone to Nak Won (12 W. 20th St., Charles North, 410-244-5501) to get a bowl of Tteok Man Doo Guk, a rice cake soup traditionally served on the Korean New Year for good luck. But it’s also enjoyed on the Western New Year, at least at Naw Won, where, on New Year’s Day, it’s free.
I haven’t checked to see whether the Tteok Man Doo Guk will be offered free again this New Year’s Day, and I’m not sure what hours it’s available. I think I got there just after 3 p.m. one year and the offer was over. Also, the soup must be eaten on the premises — you can’t take it to-go — and the idea is that you will be ordering other food as well. Otherwise, it’s tacky. I think Nak Wan has the most beautiful and best seafood pancakes in town.
