Gossip website TMZ broke the Ray Rice story that’s gotten so divisive it might bring down NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. This other story they found about “another ferocious assault involving a Baltimore superstar” probably won’t have that much impact, i”m guessing.
Here’s the site’s description of the 2013 video they dug up, told in classic TMZ tabloid style: “Another ferocious assault involving a Baltimore superstar … the Orioles mascot … who got HIT IN THE BALLS by a dumbass fan AND FOUGHT BACK … and TMZ Sports has the footage.”
Yep, that just about covers it.
According to Mr. Met (of, you guessed it, the Mets), sports mascots have to deal with this kind of thing all of the time. Apparently some idiots think mascots don’t have feelings (or nerve endings).
TMZ reports that the man who hit the Oriole Bird was arrested shortly after the video was taken; we can’t find any evidence of that, but it wouldn’t have been the first time the big bird pressed charges: In 1999, a Philly man was charged with second-degree assault and reckless endangerment for shoving the big bird into a wall at Camden Yards.
