Throughout their time at Calvert School, students of all ages are encouraged to be strong communicators and caring members of the community. As they get older, the school provides greater opportunities for student leadership. As the oldest students on campus, seventh and eighth graders are encouraged to lead student initiatives, serve as role models, and build partnerships that foster camaraderie and connection between Lower and Middle School students.
During the 2025-2026 school year, Calvert eighth graders drew inspiration from recent leadership journeys – group travel programs focused on real-world issues like sustainability and environmental stewardship – through Calvert’s Institute for Leadership & Purpose (ILP).
Motivated by experiences in Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas, the students launched the Eco Buddies partnership to introduce concepts of sustainability and outdoor education to Calvert’s youngest students. Throughout the year, the eighth graders met with students in Fifth Age (kindergarten) to read seasonal books, make sustainable crafts, explore Calvert’s outdoor learning spaces, and plan a winter bird-watching expedition. For the eighth graders, this program provides the opportunity to mentor younger students while fostering care for the environment. For the Fifth Agers, Eco Buddies provides trusted role models who display curiosity, a deep appreciation for the outdoors, and what it means to be responsible members of a community.
These leadership opportunities empower students to apply their learning beyond the classroom, strengthen connection across grade levels, and make a meaningful impact within the Calvert community.
