I’ll give you a hint: it happened during the singing of the national anthem.
While you were doing whatever it is you do on a Tuesday, Michael Phelps picked up two more gold medals at the Rio Olympics (bringing his lifetime total 21).
Phelps stood on the medal stand to collect one of them for a win in the 200-meter butterfly, tearing up at the sound of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” when his “boys from Baltimore” who were there to cheer him on let out a loud “O!” at the second to last line.
The Orioles reference caused Phelps to burst out laughing, and he eventually found himself having to explain the tradition to NBC.
In NBC’s footage of the medal ceremony the “O!” is inaudible, but Phelps reacts immediately.
