Jean Waller Brune, Head of Roland Park Country School announced today that RPCS is the first independent school in the nation to be approved to open a charter school. Plans are underway to open a girls’ middle school in Baltimore City in September, 2015.

The Lille May Carroll Jackson School, named for the pioneer of the civil rights movement in Baltimore and Maryland, is an outgrowth of years of reflection and action at RPCS. The move comes out of an RPCS ethos that an independent school has a responsibility to be an integral part of the broader educational life of the city in which it is located. Efforts to create deeper community outreach began over a decade ago when RPCS opened its campus to public school enrichment camps and helped create the successful Middle Grades Partnership, Growing Girls and Gardens, a program with both RPCS and public school participants, which now extends support and educational opportunities to the girls who attended during middle school throughout their high school and college years.

“RPCS is proud to be a part of the solution in the education of middle school girls in Baltimore. We believe wholeheartedly that the Lillie May Carroll Jackson School is a harbinger of a new era where educators in all sectors work together to bring the very best to the lives of all children,” said Jean Brune, the head of of RPCS.
