Sinai Hospital broke ground on a $50 million expansion of its emergency department Wednesday.

The project, which is expected to be complete by December 2024, will feature larger patient rooms, a larger trauma center, and more space for sub-specialties like pediatrics.

According to officials from LifeBridge Health, Sinai Hospital’s parent company, the expanded emergency department will feature 36,600 square feet of new construction, 33,500 square feet of interior renovation and a new second story for administrative staff.

This project will more than double the size of the current emergency department. The new construction will expand the waiting room area and add a new ambulance wing that will help crews unload patients from emergency vehicles faster.

According to hospital officials, the last major renovation to the department was more than 25 years ago when it was estimated to serve 55,000 patients. The emergency department will be able to see 30% more patients each year with these renovations.

The emergency department expansion groundbreaking comes after LifeBridge announced last month a new outpatient cancer treatment center. The three-story, 125,000 square feet facility will feature adult and pediatric infusion bays and exam spaces, renovated radiation oncology suites, and other additions.
