What: A nice house — unless you are one of those people who hates painted brick. They are legion, according to Reddit, which may explain why this house has been on the market awhile. On the other hand, there’s a shelter blogger in Kentucky (Beneath My Heart) who is “obsessed with them,” so you never know. It does seem to be a hallmark of the Old South. This house is more white-washed than painted — a softer look, which seems to suit its casual, not-trying-too-hard appeal. Its bones are good. The year 1931 was one of the last years of fine home construction in America until after the Depression, and this one was expensively built, with nice proportions and details. A recent renovation has brought it up to date, and a sunroom was enlarged to take advantage of the views over its pretty property. The big Georgian windows let in a lot of light, which accounts for its warm southern charm.
Where: Poplar Hill, or North Roland Park, (both are correct) is the neighborhood between Northern Parkway and Lake Avenue, on the west side of Roland Avenue. This house is on the upper part of Bellemore Road, closer to Roland before Bellemore begins its long, winding descent to Falls Road. The land behind the house belongs to the Boys Latin School, one of the neighborhood’s many private schools — all within a mile or so.
Why: Beautifully sited. Large, private, sunny lot between two beautiful old trees.
Why Not: Renovation not top-drawer. Back patio near the house is skimpy.
Would Suit: Buyer with southern roots.
NB. Master bath has under-counter washing machine.
