Sponsored Post – After falling out of a helicopter in Afghanistan in 2006, Army Staff Sergeant Andrew Hill was sent to Walter Reed Medical Center in Silver Spring to face an arduous recovery and a long stint in a wheelchair. The once active and adventuresome Hill became depressed and dispirited. But when Bob Banach, of USA Hockey, introduced Hill to sled hockey, he got his mojo back.
“Hockey was the only reason to leave my room,” says Hill. After realizing the benefits hockey had on his mental and physical recovery, Hill set out to get more injured soldiers on the ice and The USA Warrior Ice Hockey Program was born.
“We give these guys a reason to smile,” he says. “We get them out of the hospital for a few hours and get them on the ice and all of a sudden they can be themselves again. “
bd’s Mongolian Grill in Bethesda will hold a fundraiser for the inspirational program Wednesday, July 20, from 11:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Diners who stop by during those hours will have the chance to participate in a silent auction, a 50/50 raffle and a meet-and-greet with players from the USA Warriors Ice Hockey Program.
“We started as a clinic,” says Hill, describing the success of the program. “A few injured soldiers from Walter Reed renting ice (rinks) and learning or relearning how to play ice hockey. The more people started participating, the more we realized that we could make the clinic into a full-fledged team.”
Along with the proceeds from the raffle and the auction, a percentage of all food and drink sales that day will be donated to USA Warriors Ice Hockey, so the more people who eat, drink, and mingle the better!
