The former Read’s drug store building at Howard and Lexington streets will become a new home for the Spotlighters Theatre, with an exhibit about the building’s civil rights history, if Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake approves a proposal submitted by Spotlighters.

Being Joan Rivers (in Baltimore)

University of Baltimore MFA student Nancy Murray recounts the day she got to know Joan Rivers quite personally.

In my acting days I had a reputation for being able to play any character at a moment’s notice. It didn’t matter if it was a murderous psychopath, a disco-dancing diva or a Puerto Rican man. If I played the character I could make it believable. I liked this about myself. I thought it said something about my ability to empathize with others. I was grateful for it because it meant that I always had work.

Center Stage Season Preview 2012-2013

1

Center Stage announced this week its 2012-2013. It’s the first season for Kwame Kwei-Armah, the theater’s new artistic director, and it’s Center Stage’s 50th Anniversary Season.

The theater aims to be a focal point for art as a catalyst for debate. “We hope that when you leave a show, whether you have loved it or not, you will have been exposed to an idea, an emotion, or an experience that will stay with you long after you have left the auditorium,” it reads on the Center Stage website.

A special treat?  One of the plays on the schedule is written by Kwei-Armah, who talks about the season in the video above.

“House of Cards” Needs Some Baltimore Extras to Look Like Washingtonians

0

Netflix’s House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey, just put out a call for extras to portray Hill staffers, politicians, lobbyists and wealthy-looking Washington men and women.  The series starts filming in and around Baltimore any day now.

“The ‘wealthy-looking Washington men and women’ might be a problem. But I am guessing we might be able to scrounge up a few of them in Roland Park or Hunt Valley,” jokes Baltimore Sun TV Critic David Zurawik.

See the AFTRA-SAG hotline website for more information on how to apply.  David Zurawik also posts on his Z on TV blog more information about applying directly to the Central Casting Washington, D.C. office.

Who knew there was a Central Casting Washington, D.C. office?  There’s a Baltimore office, too!
