Get rid of your old pumpkins the fun way at the Great Pumpkin Smash!

Wondering what to do with those carved jack-o’-lanterns once Halloween is over and the deer and elements have had their way with them? Bring them to the โ€œGreat Pumpkin Smashโ€ on Nov. 8 at Eastern Regional Park.

The Baltimore County Department of Public Works and Transportation will host its inaugural โ€œGreat Pumpkin Smashโ€ event, set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8. The event will bring the community together and benefit the countyโ€™s composting efforts at the same time.

Experience the unbridled joy of (supervised) destruction. Choose from an assortment of smashing instruments to pulverize those leftover pumpkins just looking sad and caved in on your front porch.

After the event, the pumpkins will be taken to the countyโ€™s compost pile at the Eastern Sanitary Landfill in White Marsh, where they will biodegrade into compost used for landscaping and other county projects.

The benefits of composting are many and well-known. It saves precious space and decreases greenhouse gas build-up, important here in the countyโ€™s only active landfill. Along with the โ€œGreat Pumpkin Smash,โ€ there will be giveaways, games, and snacks for the whole family.

Not feeling very smashy? Not in the mood to pound your pumpkin to pieces? That is just fine โ€“ residents can still support the composting efforts by dropping off their pumpkins for collection. Gourds of all shapes and sizes are accepted, carved or uncarved. No squash is safe from ruin.

Eastern Regional Park is located at 11723 Eastern Ave. in Middle River. The event will be held rain or shine.
