Starting Saturday (Dec. 13), MARC Penn line passengers will be allowed to bring bikes on weekend trains.

MTA announced the launch of a pilot program Friday that makes room for manual two-wheeled transportation in a special bike car. The bike car, which was made by refurbishing a single-level rail car that was put out of service, can accommodate 16 bikes. But it could be expanded to fit 10 more if the program proves popular. A second bike car could also be added in 2015.

โ€œThe bike community has lobbied for more bicycle access to trains for years, and MTA listened,โ€ said Nate Evans, Executive Director of Bike Maryland. โ€œWe are thrilled to see this come to fruition.โ€
