Where: About 110 miles, 2 ½ hours, from downtown Baltimore. Founded in 1631 by Dutch settlers, Lewes motto is “the first town, in the first state,” so they’re definitely, first. Location wise, it’s also the first ocean beach town you reach driving over from Baltimore — a little further south is Rehoboth, and then Ocean City. About 3,000 people live in Lewes year round, about 7,000 in summer. The Cape Henlopen State Park, with a seashore nature center, is very near town, and there’s a ferry going to-and-from Cape May every few hours in the summer. The Lewes Yacht Club is nice — private, but non-members can take sailing lessons. Tons of restaurants, popular favorites Agave and Buttery open all year round.
Why: You can drive on the beach with a surf fishing permit.
Why Not: Only big waves are around the point at the State Park beaches, Lewes Beach has no waves.
Would Suit: Social beachcombers
NB: Many people find Lewes to be a true “dream town.”
