Think the safest Maryland university is in the county or alongside the shore’s gently lapping waves? Think again. The University of Baltimore (UB) is ranked the safest public college in Maryland as published by StateUniversity.com. In fact, UB has numbers too negligible to report in five out of the nine safety-indicating categories.
The campus safety rankings are based on the severity and the frequency of the crime. The crimes monitored include aggravated assault, rape, robbery (a holdup), burglary (a break-in), and vehicle theft. Fortunately, none of the Maryland universities had any murders to report. The most prevalent crime across all the schools, including UB, is larceny-theft.
While our other downtown school, the University of Maryland-Baltimore (UMB), is ranked a lowly seventh out of 12, its position is an improvement from ninth place in 2010. Unlike UB that has no statistical number of aggravated assaults, UMB has the fourth-highest ranking within that category. The college with the highest number of aggravated assaults and the one that ranks as the most dangerous campus (for the second consecutive year) is the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
The most shocking statistic is that Bowie State University has had a few incidents related to arson.
I’m always skeptical of statistics because crimes can go unreported, or charges can be dropped. But I’m optimistic that of the crimes reported most frequently, they are the less severe that usually don’t involve the use of force, like stealing.
