In the holiday hubbub, I almost missed this New York Times story about the glorious spectacle of black marching bands.
It draws from the photography of Jules Allen, who says the goal of his work is “to describe African-American culture as a celebration of victory.” The decades-long photo project looks at high school bands, community drum and bugle corps–and also marching bands from historically black colleges, such as Baltimore’s own Morgan State.
You can see more of Allen’s photographs from his upcoming book Marching Band here and here. For an inspiring look at the Morgan State band in action, check out this video. They are amazing to watch.
