BWI is already one of the busiest airports in the country–and it might be about to get even busier.
According to the Baltimore Sun, BWI is mulling over a possible $250 million expansion that would add new gates and provide more options for international arrivals and departures. The airport is already in the planning stages of a $126 million expansion; this new plan would double the scope of that project.
While BWI saw its domestic passengers decline by 1.8 percent last year, the number of international travelers increased by 13.5 percent. This is part of a broader trend toward more international travel. The BWI expansion would be aimed at addressing this emerging need. Construction would be funded in part by a new $4.50 “passenger facility charge” on travelers who pass through the airport.
Let’s hope this means more cheap flights to Iceland.
