The tradition of the Poe Toaster is set to be revived. The identity of the new undercover orator, however, will remain a mystery.
In the tradition of the writer himself, the Poe Toaster was a much-loved Baltimore mystery tale. The person loved the writer so much that he visited Poe’s gravesite each year on the writer’s birthday, After a cognac-assisted tribute, he left three roses and the bottle of cognac behind.
But in 2009, the Poe Toaster stopped making appearances. Looking to revive the tradition, the Maryland Historical Society launched a search for the next Toaster. About 100 people got a chance to see the finals on Saturday, and the next Toaster was selected by secret ballot. The identity of the winner, however, won’t be revealed.
The tribute is set for Poe’s birthday weekend of January 19.
