What a way to start the weekend! A magnitude 4.8 earthquake centered in New Jersey was shallow enough to be felt as far south as here in Maryland, throughout New York State, and as far north as Maine.
Itโs not a huge earthquake as far as these things go, but itโs unusual for the region and a bit alarming if a person isnโt used to them. There have been no major disruptions in New Jersey or New York as far as transportation is concerned.
Here were some local reactions in and around Baltimore:

Baltimore, did we just have a smallish earthquake?
Was drafting a document when my dog woke up from a nap and got antsy and my desk lamp started moving, so Iโm hoping it was an earthquake bc otherwise Iโll have to assume that my desk area is haunted. ๐ — Rob Vela (@Rob_Vela) April 5, 2024
Media and government officials reported the same:
Getting several viewer calls about a earthquake felt here in Maryland. It could possibly be from this one reported in New Jersey. Iโll be keeping an eye out for official reports. #maryland #earthquake pic.twitter.com/greKJSSv60 — Dalencia Jenkins (@DalenciaWBAL) April 5, 2024
Baltimore, I know that many of you felt minor tremors this morning. @USGS_Quakes has reported a minor earthquake in New Jersey that was felt throughout our region. I have just spoken with our team @BaltimoreOEM and can confirm that our city is safe and sound. — Brandon M. Scott (@MayorBMScott) April 5, 2024

Some are impressed with how X (formerly Twitter) stays unmatched for keeping up with the news.
I must say that if twitter is good for nothing else still it is keeping up with fast news. #earthquake #maryland — LittleCrunchy (@LittleCrunchy) April 5, 2024
Others blamed the dog.
Either we just had an #earthquake in #Maryland or my chubby black Lab is downstairs scratching his itchy skin. I genuinely donโt know which it was. — Molly Balint (@mollybalint) April 5, 2024
This gif of The Weeknd got a lot of mileage.

Regardless, thanks, Mother Nature, for making X feel like old-timey Twitter again!
