catch of the day fish (2)

Smart holiday shoppers know that it’s all about going local this season. And nowhere in the area has  more independent and totally unique shops than Green Spring Station– where you’re sure to find something for everyone on your list. But come December 10th, there will be even more to love about Green Spring Station. That’s because Maryland Art Place (MAP) and Green Spring Station have teamed up for MAP’s (MAP) final IMPACT project of the year. It’s a sprawling series of installations created by MICA students using actual items from the merchants of the shopping center. So when you drop by for the rest of the holiday season, you’ll be able to take in some phenomenal artwork while you shop. The installation’s opening reception will take place Thursday, December 10 from 6-8pm with complimentary bubbly and Prosecco at all shops which are staying open until 8pm.

The MICA students who’ve created the IMPACT installation come from Susie Brandt’s Accumulation and Metaphor class. Working in small groups, the students created sculptures that responded to different sites around Green Spring Station. Some works you might spy are the “Vine”– where an existing lamppost has been transformed into  a vine-like network with materials mimicking leaves, flowers and fruits. Or look up on the ceiling for an installation of netting and rope accumulating various clothing such as shirts, scarves and wedding veils. In the plaza you may notice a mysterious sculpture of consumer materials painted black, obscuring their identifiers and function. It’s art that makes you see the space around you differently, and that responds to the place where it’s been created.

IMPACT is an annual, public art program developed to extend Maryland Art Place’s reach to broader audiences.  Each IMPACT project is wholly unique and developed based on the shape and feel of the partnering site (in this case, Green Spring Station). Of course, you can view the artwork long after the opening. The installation will remain up through the end of the year. But Green Spring Station is fabulous anytime. Especially when there’s gift shopping to be done.
Green Spring Station, Maryland Art Place and MICA invite you to the Station to check items off your holiday gift list, enjoy some bubbly and see the IMPACT creations by MICA students. Green Spring Station is conveniently located at the intersection of I-83 and I-695 at 10803 Falls Road Lutherville, Maryland 21093.
