If you’ve lived in Baltimore for any length of time, you’ve probably had the Ace of Cakes conversation with at least a handful of out-of-town friends and family. “Do you watch Ace of Cakes? I looooove Ace of Cakes!” “Do you know them?” “Have you ever gotten a cake there?” “Really? It’s right down the block from you?” “Everyone on the show seems so quirky and fun!” Etc, etc, etc. And that’s cool. We dig having a nationally renowned cake bakery in our own backyard. And we’re even more into it now that Duff and company have started offering cake decorating classes where we can pick up some tips and skills, and of course, go home with our very own Charm City Cake.
Charm City Cakes began offering cake decorating classes this spring. Each class takes place for a few hours on a Saturday, and each one teaches newcomers how to decorate a specific kind of cake (tomorrow’s class is a how-to on making a Boba Fett cake, and next weekend is an American flag cake). Even if those exact cake models aren’t your personal vision of what a masterwork cake would be, the classes come with so whole of general information about which tools to use when, why some ingredients are better than others, and even a little bit of how to “fake it ‘til you make it.” The bottom line? These classes impart useful knowledge, bring the public face to face with their favorite local foodie celebs, and most importantly, send participants home with a delicious (if amateurly decorated) gourmet cake.
Charm City Cakes decorating classes take place on Saturdays from 11am until 1:30. Costs vary depending on the week. For more information, or to register (space is limited) visit www.charmictycakes.com.
