University of Maryland, College Park announced Tuesday that this springs commencement speaker would be Orioles legend Cal Ripken Jr. Ripken never went to college himself — he started playing baseball professionally right out of high school — but said he has “great respect for higher education and the great value it brings to young people.”
In a way, Ripken is the perfect sports icon to be imparting wisdom to youth at this moment in time. With doping scandals all but ruining professional sports, hearing the words of someone whose most celebrated achievement was the product not so much of a monstrous physique as of determination and heart — two things that will serve you well whatever your life path.
For statements from Ripken and the student committee that selected him, read the article in the Baltimore Sun.
