THE DOLL

The notion of fashion shows featuring little girls typically conjures up images of too-young children toddling across a stage in way-too-high heels while balancing tiaras on their teased-hair heads. Itโ€™s a sight not typically seen in Baltimore, as far as Iโ€™m aware, except maybe at Hampdenโ€™s annual Hon Fest. But hereโ€™s a new (and, I think, much improved) twist on that tired theme: a wholesomely-themed fashion show featuring little girls dressed up as the beloved, and becoming, American Girl Dolls. A search for the models is happening here this weekend.

If you know a little girl whoโ€™s a shoe-in for Saige, Felicity, McKenna or another American Girl favorite, here are the details. Casting calls for models to participate in the Second Annual American Girl Fashion Show, to be held at Baltimoreโ€™s Hippodrome Theatre on March 23 and 24, 2012, take place at Columbia Mall this Saturday, January 12, from 12pm to 2pm in the lower level center court. Tryouts continue the following day at White Marsh Mallโ€™s lower level center court, 12pm-2pm. Girls between 5 and 12 years of age are eligible, but thereโ€™s a catch: they must wear either a size 6X or 10.

While this last detail might be a little off-putting, the beneficiary of the fashion showโ€™s proceeds is anything but. One hundred percent of the profits will go to the University of Maryland Childrenโ€™s Hospital and the Cool Kids Campaign, a foundation that aims to improve the quality of life for children and their families with cancer.
