With the start of spring just a couple weeks away, gardeners can purchase compost bins and rain barrels from Carroll County Government to aid their efforts this growing season.
Carroll County Government Office of Recycling Operations is holding a compost bin and rain barrel sale through April 5.
Environmental benefits of compost bins and rain barrels abound.
“Composting diverts organic materials such as kitchen waste from the trash can to the compost bin and out of the landfill. Compost reduces the need for chemical fertilizers. By amending soil with rich nutrient compost, gardens produce bigger, healthier plants and veggies,” according to a news release from Carroll County Government.
They added, “Rain barrels divert water from storm drains, decreasing the impact of runoff to streams and minimizing sewer overflows during heavy rainfalls. Additionally, using a rain barrel can reduce water demand during summer months, preserve a natural resource, and save homeowners money on water bills.”
Community members can place orders online here. Orders must then be picked up on April 11, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Carroll County Government building at 225 N. Center St. in Westminster.
Products include a rain barrel for $70, compost bin for $60, compost turners for $17, compost thermometers for $20, and kitchen collector containers for $12.
