Interested in a new way to enjoy good food and neighbors with minimal effort? Look no further than the Farmers Market Supper Club’s Mid-Autumn Festival Potluck, hosted on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at Axel Brewers Hill.
The Mid-Autumn Festival, also called the Autumn Moon Festival or the Mooncake Festival, is observed in Chinese and other East and Southeast Asian cultures on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar. Families get together, share mooncakes, and admire the full moon.
This Farmers Market Supper Club event is inspired by the themes of gathering, harvest, abundance and togetherness associated with the mid-Autumn Festival, creating the space for neighbors to sit around one communal table for a unique meal created by those attending. Instead of a pre-set menu, each guest helps build the dinner.
Attendees are asked to bring a sweet or savory dish inspired by Mid-Autumn traditions, an East or Southeast Asian dish they love, a family recipe, or simply the flavors of the fall harvest. Guests are encouraged to use seasonal ingredients from Baltimore-area farmers markets whenever possible.
The event is not only about the food, though.
Guests will be encouraged to share a short story about their recipe: where it came from, who introduced them to it, a tradition connected to it, or what motivated them to bring it.
“The idea behind Farmers Market Supper Club is that food gives people an easy reason to sit down together,” said Charlie Urrutia, organizer of the Farmers Market Supper Club. “For this dinner, we wanted to take inspiration from the Mid-Autumn Festival’s themes of harvest and togetherness and create a table where people can learn from one another, discover new foods, and leave knowing a few more people in their city.”
Farmers Market Supper Club events are welcoming to all Baltimoreans, longtime residents or newcomers, new or experienced cooks, and anyone interested in food and community. The club’s larger mission is to create opportunities for Baltimoreans to connect through seasonal food, local markets, shared meals, and storytelling.
Guests do not have to personally observe or celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival to attend this event. The supper club encourages participants to be curious and respectful, with an interested in learning about the foods, traditions, and stories brought to the table.
