Hampden took a hit when B. Doughnut left its space on Chestnut Avenue last month. But gourmet doughnut lovers will rejoice to learn that a new doughnut shop is taking over and planning to blaze its own trail in the same space starting later this week.

Owner Josh Kowitz poses inside his new store on Chestnut Avenue.

As first reported by Josh Gordon at the BBJ, Center Cut Doughnuts is set to open its doors to customers on Thursday, Jan. 12. Speaking at his new location at 3528 Chestnut Avenue today, owner Josh Kowitz said he had been selling his doughnuts two blocks away for two seasons at the Hampden Farmers Market, but decided to take the opportunity to operate a permanent outpost in the neighborhood upon hearing that the owners of B. Doughnut were moving.

As he was unpacking supplies at the store, Kowitz shared some of his planned menu. He said they’ll always have four standard flavors – glazed, chocolate-iced, brown-buttered and strawberry-iced – and will try out one or two others for the first couple weeks after the opening. “Once I get my footing, I will start opening up a little more,” he said. “As time goes on, we’ll have some knishes and other baked goods. We’ll have some savory stuff. I’m really looking to open up the world of doughnuts.”

To get a preview of Kowitz’s imaginative creations, from Nutella-filled cinnamon rolls to chocolate-welled doughnuts, just take a quick look at Center Cut’s Facebook page.

Center Cut Doughnuts will be open from Tuesday through Sunday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., starting Thursday, Jan. 12.
